What's left behind the scenes

  • The American version of the film, in addition to the changed title, was also shortened from 104 to 85 minutes. Several dialogues and a scene where Lionel calms a zombie by giving it whiskey were cut, in addition to scenes of violence.
  • The rat-monkey puppet was animated using stop-motion technology by Peter Jackson himself.
  • Skull Island is the very island inhabited by the legendary King Kong. In Peter Jackson’s 'King Kong', there is an empty cage on board the ship with a sign reading ‘Sumatran Rat-Monkey’. Skull Island was filmed in the same location as the Paths of the Dead in 'The Return of the King'.
  • Elizabeth Moody, who played Vera Cosgrove, appeared in the extended edition of 'The Lord of the Rings' as Lobelia Sackville-Baggins at Bilbo’s birthday party.
  • Jed Brophy (punk zombie Void) played an orc rider on a warg in 'The Two Towers'.
  • Peter Jackson's mother plays a woman at the zoo who says "Ooo!" when Lionel's mother kills the rat-monkey.
  • A poster for the film "The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms" is visible on the wall of Lionel's room.
  • The scene of Uncle Les's appearance as a zombie was filmed unsuccessfully: when Les's head protruding from his body is shown in close-up, a thread pulling his neck back is clearly visible in the frame.
  • When filming the scene of the final lawnmower massacre, "blood" was sprayed at a rate of 5 gallons per second.
  • The scene of zombies being minced by a lawnmower is one of the bloodiest in cinematic history. During the carnage, 40 zombies were killed and 400 liters of blood were spilled.
