What's left behind the scenes

  • Filming began in July 2012 in Namibia, almost 18 months after the planned date.
  • In February 2013, the "Namibian Coast Conservation Management Group" accused the filmmakers of damaging parts of the Namib Desert, leading to a reduction in the number of plant and animal species.
  • Jeremy Renner was considered for the main role.
  • Liam Fountain, who starred in the short film "Mad Max: Renegade" (2011), auditioned for the role of Max.
  • Filming was almost started in Namibia in 2003. Mel Gibson was then expected to play the main role. However, the project was suspended for safety reasons after the United States tightened transportation conditions and restricted travel to the region. After the start of the war in Iraq, the project was frozen. Gibson eventually became interested in "The Passion of the Christ" (2004) and left the project.
  • Teresa Palmer was originally on the casting list, but was forced to leave the project due to production delays. She was replaced by Abbey Lee.
  • Courtney Eaton replaced Adelaide Clemens on set.
  • Over 80% of the footage was shot live. Computer graphics were used minimally: to enhance the landscape of Namibia, to remove equipment that appeared in the frame during stunt filming, and for Charlize Theron's character's prosthetic arm.
  • When the project was still in development, Michael Biehn and Heath Ledger were considered for the role of Max.
  • According to Tom Hardy, he specifically met with Mel Gibson to discuss taking on the role of Max. Gibson supported him and gave his blessing.
  • Bert Newton was one of the first actors that director George Miller brought onto the project, back when the film was planned to be shot in Broken Hill (New South Wales, Australia), the same location as the filming of 'Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior' (1981). Unfortunately, torrential rains completely altered the desert landscape, and several years later the decision was made to move filming to Namibia. By that time, Bert Newton had decided to leave the project.
  • The filmmakers consulted with writer and feminist Eve Ensler, known for her play 'The Vagina Monologues,' regarding the portrayals of strong female characters.
  • John Powell was considered as the film's composer.
  • James Fresville auditioned for a role in this film.
  • Eight film cameras were broken during filming.
  • A special Black & Chrome Edition (black and white version) of the film exists.
