What's left behind the scenes

  • The shots of Maria's trial are actually shots of the trial of serial killer Aileen Carol Wuornos (1956-2002).
  • The idea for the screenplay and the film came to Matthew Peterman and William Brent Bell when they read in the newspapers that a school of exorcism was opening at the Vatican.
  • Matthew Peterman and William Brent Bell initially wrote a script for a typical thriller, but a lack of interest from major film studios prompted them to revise the script and make a pseudo-documentary film in the "found footage" genre (a genre in which the entire film or a significant part of it is presented to the viewer as material from found recordings on film or video cameras, often left behind by missing or deceased characters).
