Short description

A Westerner finds refuge with a group of women in a church during Japan's rape of Nanking in 1937. Posing as a priest, he attempts to lead the women to safety.

What's left behind the scenes

Before starting filming, Zhang Yimou studied the history of the Nanjing Massacre for three years. Some scenes in the film were recreated from photographs of that era.
The film is banned in Japan.
Hinamatsuri is a Japanese Doll Festival, or Girls' Day, celebrated on March 3rd. On this day, families with daughters display special dolls for public view, arranged on a tiered stand resembling a staircase.
