What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the eponymous comic book novel by Alan Moore and Eddie Campbell.
  • The famous Whitechapel district was filmed on the old streets of Prague. The district was almost entirely rebuilt by set designers, down to the last cobblestone.
  • The film went through several studios: Disney bought the rights in 1994, then the project moved to New Line, and in the fall of 2000 ended up with Fox, where it was completed.
  • The film gathers all the myths and evidence about Jack the Ripper. One fact, seemingly, influenced the choice of title: it is known that the murderer sent letters to the London newspaper 'The Times' and signed them with two words: 'From Hell'.
  • The real Jack the Ripper was never found; Jack the Ripper in the film was committed to a mental institution.
  • At the studio's request, two different endings to the film were shot: one was a traditional happy ending, and the other was more realistic.
