Filming took place in the Chinese provinces of Gansu, Zhejiang, Inner Mongolia, and Sichuan.
The full version of the film has a runtime of 110 minutes.
To star in this film, Jet Li agreed to a reduction in his fee.
Jackie Chan was offered the role of the emperor, but he declined.
The emperor notices, after the Nameless One (Jet Li) tells him there are 19 ways to write the word 'sword', that he will solve this problem. Besides unifying China in history, Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi, or Ying Zheng, is also known for introducing a common writing system throughout China. Regardless of dialect, people began to use a single set of characters, which made communication much easier.
Maggie Cheung needed weeks of training for filming the movie. Even actress Zhang Ziyi, who received much positive feedback for the film 'Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon', required intensive preparation to learn to wield two swords well.
The soldiers of the Qin army were played by actual members of the People's Liberation Army of China. Estimates suggest that 18,000 extras were used.
