Carpenter himself was offered to direct the remake. He declined, stating that he had already filmed his 'The Fog' once and remained on the project as a producer.
Revolution Studios gave the project a 'green light' even before the script was written.
Debra Hill, with whom Carpenter wrote the screenplay for the original 'The Fog,' passed away shortly before filming of the remake began.
Stacy Ferguson, the lead singer of the Black Eyed Peas, was originally cast as Stevie Wayne, but she dropped out of the project at the last moment.
Julia Stiles expressed interest in the role of Elizabeth Williams, and the character was specifically made slightly older to suit her. However, when Stiles left the project, the role went to Maggie Grace, and Elizabeth was subsequently made younger again to fit Grace.
Selma Blair was the first choice for the role of Stevie.
