What's left behind the scenes
- The film is based on the eponymous poem by Dushyant Kumar.
- Rakhesh Mehra needed seven years to study and create the story, including three years to write the screenplay.
- The film suffered a significant setback when one of the original producers ultimately failed to contribute any funds; the shortfall put the project in jeopardy two months before principal photography began. However, after Aamir Khan agreed to star, Mehra turned to Ronnie Screwvala of UTV Motion Pictures.
- Aamir Khan agreed to act in the film immediately after reading the script. He lost 10 kilograms for the filming.
- The film was shot in New Delhi, Agra, Rajasthan, and Punjab.
