What's left behind the scenes

  • In Russia, the film is also known under the titles "Sidney" and "Cool Eight."
  • Initially, director Paul Thomas Anderson wanted to title the film “Sidney.” This was his directorial debut, and his opinions on anything weren’t particularly sought after (this even applied to the final edit – unlike all of Anderson’s later films), so Rysher Entertainment independently re-edited the film and gave it the title “Boogie Nights.” This infuriated Anderson, and through various maneuvers and persuasions, he managed to convince the studio to allow him to release his own version (albeit under the same title, “Boogie Nights”).
  • According to Philip Baker Hall, Philip Seymour Hoffman (1967-2014) improvised in practically all scenes.
  • Camera assistant Michael J. Riva turned down an offer to work with Kevin Reynolds for two weeks on the science fiction action film “Waterworld” (1995) in order to work on this film. Since then, he has consistently worked as a camera assistant on all of Paul Thomas Anderson’s films.
  • In Russia, the film is also known under the titles 'Sydney' and 'Cool Eight'.
