Short description
When a son and mother move to Seattle in hopes for a better life, the mother meets a seemingly polite man. Things go south when the man turns out to be abusive, endangering their lives. As the mother struggles to maintain hope in an impossible situation, the son has plans to escape.

- The role of Carolina Wolff Hansen, played by Ellen Barkin, was originally offered to actress Debra Winger.
- The real name of Toby's brother, who is called Gregory in the film, is Jeffrey. Ten years before Tobias Wolff wrote "This Boy's Life," Jeffrey Wolff also published his memoirs, which focused on his complex relationship with his father.
- Tobey Maguire auditioned for the lead role in the film, but the director felt he wasn't quite right for it. Leonardo DiCaprio, who ultimately got the part, and Tobey Maguire were already close friends at the time, and at DiCaprio's request, Maguire was given the opportunity to play Toby's friend, Chuck Boldger.
