Short description
After a global war, the seaside kingdom known as the Valley of the Wind remains one of the last strongholds on Earth untouched by a poisonous jungle and the powerful insects that guard it. Led by the courageous Princess Nausicaä, the people of the Valley engage in an epic struggle to restore the bond between humanity and Earth.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Hayao Miyazaki took the name Nausicaä from the princess in Homer's 'Odyssey'. He borrowed the main character's fascination from the ancient Japanese 'Legend of the Noble Maiden Who Loved Insects'.
  • At the time the film was being made, the manga had only just begun, and Miyazaki did not yet know when and how it would end. Therefore, an ending was invented specifically for the film, which the director later dismissed with great disdain.
  • Miyazaki often features characters with the same appearance in different cartoons. The appearance of Nausicaä is reused by the director a few years later in the character of Fio in 'Porco Rosso' (1992).
  • This is Topcraft studio's first and only work on the Japanese market. Before the film, the studio was a subcontractor for the American company Rankin-Bass, and afterward, it became the foundation of Studio Ghibli, created by Hayao Miyazaki and Isao Takahata.
  • It was working on this film that brought Joe Hisaishi fame, at a time when he was a little-known minimalist composer. Hayao Miyazaki invited him after listening to Hisaishi's first album, which was released in a small print run.
