Short description
Roberta is a bored suburban housewife who is fascinated with a woman, Susan, she only knows about by reading messages to and from her in the personals section of the newspaper. This fascination reaches a peak when an ad with the headline "Desperately Seeking Susan" proposes a rendezvous. Roberta goes too, and in a series of events involving amnesia and mistaken identity, steps into Susan's life.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The triplets in identical clothing near the publishing house where Madonna places an ad were not in the script and ended up there purely by chance. Director Susan Seidelman noticed them on the street and decided to film them. These three brothers were separated at birth and found themselves in the public eye when they finally met as adults. Later, Tim Wardle made a documentary about them called “Three Identical Strangers”.
  • One of the film's sponsors, Camel, which had planned to invest $5,000 in its production, changed its plans and withdrew its sponsorship due to a character's line to Rosanna Arquette's character about her needing to quit smoking.
  • Upon first reading the script, Rosanna Arquette stated that she would like to play the titular role, but it turned out that the producers were offering her the role of Roberta.
  • Initially, little attention was paid to what Madonna was doing and how she was acting in the film. By the end of filming, nine weeks later, the filmmakers had to hire security to keep fans away from the set, as the album “Like a Virgin” had been released during that time and had a bombshell effect, and Madonna was already a megastar.
  • Filming took place during a period when Madonna was trying to lose weight, or rather, not gain weight. If the script required her to eat something, she would spit out the food she held in her mouth after each take, without swallowing it.
  • Triplets dressed alike near the publishing house where Madonna was placing an ad were not in the script and ended up there purely by chance. Director Susan Seidelman noticed them on the street and decided to film them. These three brothers were separated at birth and found themselves in the public eye when they finally met as adults. Later, Tim Wardle filmed a documentary about them called “Three Identical Strangers.”
