Kate's watch (played by Amy Smart) is very similar to the watch Phil wears, played by Bill Murray in Harold Ramis's fantasy comedy "Groundhog Day" (1993), and the film "12 Dates of Christmas" itself was inspired by "Groundhog Day."
Jim, played by Richard Fitzpatrick, mentions Zihuatanejo during a conversation with Jane Eastwood's character about a trip to Mexico. This is a reference to screenwriter Aaron Mendelsohn's favorite film, "The Shawshank Redemption" (Frank Darabont, 1994), as the heroes Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman met on the beach there in the finale.
The filmmakers wanted to end the film with a kiss between the characters played by Amy Smart and Marc-Paul Gosselaar against a backdrop of snow, so snow had to be added to the shot using digital technology.
Every time the heroine, Amy Smart, wakes up on Christmas Eve, one of the gifts mentioned in the classic Christmas carol "The Twelve Days of Christmas" appears on screen throughout the following day.
