Short description
Renowned musician Lydia Tár is days away from recording the symphony that will elevate her career. However, Lydia's elaborate facade begins to unravel, revealing dirty secrets and the corrosive nature of power.

What's left behind the scenes

  • While jogging through the forest, Lydia hears screams. It's a recording of the screams of Heather Donahue's character in the final scene of the horror film "The Blair Witch Project" (1999).
  • Professional cellist Sophie Kawer had never acted in a film before and attended the audition at the insistence of a friend. She learned to perform in front of the camera by taking acting lessons from Michael Caine on YouTube.
  • In preparation for her role, Cate Blanchett re-learned to play the piano, as well as learned to speak German and conduct an orchestra.
  • Cate Blanchett is genuinely conducting the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra in the film.
  • Screenwriter and director Todd Field wrote the screenplay specifically for Cate Blanchett, and the project would not have happened at all without her participation. Field and Blanchett initially planned to work on another project, but Field was unable to secure funding for it.
  • While working on the voice of her character, Cate Blanchett listened to recordings of the voice of American writer Susan Sontag.
  • While running through the forest, Lydia hears screams. This is a recording of the screams of Heather Donahue’s character in the finale of the horror film “The Blair Witch Project” (1999).
