Short description
A small, seemingly innocuous plastic reel of film leads surveillance specialist Tom Welles down an increasingly dark and frightening path. With the help of the streetwise Max, he relentlessly follows a bizarre trail of evidence to determine the fate of a complete stranger. As his work turns into obsession, he drifts farther and farther away from his wife, family and simple life as a small-town PI.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Mary Ann Matthews played Jenny Powell, a stripper hired as a body double. Powell’s appearance so pleased director Joel Schumacher that he “promoted” her and made her the victim.
  • Initially, David Fincher was considered to direct the film.
  • Studio executives had some doubts about the film’s overly oppressive atmosphere and subject matter. Endr Kevin Walker was asked to make the script less bleak, but he decided that Joel Schumacher would handle it perfectly well without his help. He proved to be right. The director fully agreed with management’s opinion. Schumacher made changes to the script, which led to a quarrel between him and Walker, widely covered by the press. Walker became so enraged that he didn’t even watch the edited film.
  • The buildings covered in graffiti shown in the film are all that remains of the structures built by Howard Hughes (1905-1976) for radar installations.
  • Eddie Pool drives a Stutz Blackhawk, a luxury car produced from 1971 to 1987. Many celebrities, such as Elvis Presley (1935-1977) and Frank Sinatra (1915-1998), owned such cars. A real battle unfolded between Presley and Sinatra for the very first car of this make, and the King of Rock and Roll won it.
