Short description
A celebration of love and creative inspiration takes place in the infamous, gaudy and glamorous Parisian nightclub, at the cusp of the 20th century. A young poet, who is plunged into the heady world of Moulin Rouge, begins a passionate affair with the club's most notorious and beautiful star.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Originally, Heath Ledger and Catherine Zeta-Jones were supposed to play the main roles.
  • 80 costume designers worked on creating 300 costumes.
  • The film's plot draws from the storylines of three operas: "La Traviata", "Bohemian", and "Orpheus and Eurydice". There is also some similarity to Jacques Offenbach's operetta "Parisian Life".
  • In November 1999, filming had to be suspended because Nicole Kidman broke a rib and injured her knee. A number of scenes were shot using static close-ups of the actress sitting in a wheelchair.
  • During filming, Nicole Kidman wore the most expensive necklace in the history of cinema, worth $1 million.
  • The song "Come What May" was written for another Baz Luhrmann film, "Romeo + Juliet" (1996).
  • The word "love" and its derivatives appear 143 times in the film.
  • Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman personally performed all their vocal parts.
  • The film is dedicated to Baz Luhrmann's father, Leonard Luhrmann, who died just before the start of filming.
  • The song "Come What May" was written for another Baz Luhrmann film, "Romeo + Juliet" (1996).
  • The word "love" and its derivatives appear in the film 143 times.
