What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Matt Bondurant's novel "The Wettest County in the World" (2008), a novel based on a true story. Bondurant wrote the book based on the true story of his grandfather.
  • Ryan Gosling was considered for the role of Jack.
  • Maggie could have played Scarlett Johansson.
  • Shia LaBeouf was the first actor cast in the film.
  • Initially, James Franco was supposed to play Howard, and Ryan Gosling was to play Forrest.
  • When inviting Jessica Chastain, John Hillcoat called Terrence Malick, with whom she had worked on 'The Tree of Life'. According to Hillcoat, he had never heard such glowing reviews about anyone, especially not from Malick.
  • Vasikovskaya, Hardy, and Chastain did not have screen tests, while Jason Clarke and Dane DeHaan did.
  • The film's producers, Douglas Wick and Lucy Fisher, were so impressed with Jason Clarke's performance that they subsequently recommended him to Baz Luhrmann for 'The Great Gatsby'.
  • Originally, Tom Hardy's character was intended to be more slender, but Hardy had to gain muscle mass for 'The Dark Knight Rises' (2012).
  • When Jack is forced to wait outside while Forrest and Howard take revenge on the two men who attacked Forrest, the outdoor lighting consists of energy-saving lamps. Obviously, this type of lamp did not exist at that time.
  • The telephone poles shown in some scenes also hold cable television lines, some of which are equipped with modern expansion loops. Cable television did not exist in the US until 1948.
  • When Jack and Cricket are chasing the truck full of bootleg liquor, the number of crates in the bed changes several times.
  • During the shootout on the bridge, the sheriff shoots Agent Reaks and appears to hit the back of his left leg. However, when Reaks retreats towards the bridge, there are no signs of a gunshot wound or blood on his suit.
  • There are several Double Cola signs (they even look old and rusty) near the station, but the Double Cola brand did not exist until 1933, and the events in the film take place in 1931.
  • In the film, one can notice the Grapette soda sign, but according to grapette.com, the company only began operations in 1939.
  • When Floyd Banner drives up in his car and stops to eliminate a competitor, the squeal of tires braking on asphalt can be heard. However, he was driving on a dirt road.
  • Jack arrives at Cricket’s and is surprised by the presence of special assistant Charlie Reakes. When Reakes hits Jack, Jack is wearing both boots, but one boot remained in the church in the previous scene. The next scene is with Forrest at the station, where he shakes hands with Jack (with a broken face). His boot is lying in a bag.
  • The flowers at Cricket's funeral (buttercups, waxflower, French anemones) were likely not available in rural mountainous Virginia at that time. It would have been more plausible if they had used wildflowers, such as goldenrod and Queen Anne's lace.
  • In the scene where Reakes beats Jack, in the moment where the special agent throws the younger Bondurant off the porch, it's visible that padding is under the foliage onto which LaBaff's character falls.
