What's left behind the scenes

  • When Dean DeBlois was offered to direct a sequel, he agreed on the condition that he would be allowed to expand the franchise into a trilogy.
  • Dean DeBlois’s primary source of inspiration for this film was "Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back" (1980).
  • This is the first film from DreamWorks Animation to use new animation and lighting software. The new programs, called "Premo" and "Torch," allowed for improvements in facial animation, the sensation of fat, the feeling of flabby skin jiggling, and the movement of skin over muscles.
  • Chris Sanders, the writer and director of "How to Train Your Dragon" (2010), served only as an executive producer on this film. Sanders was unable to participate in this project as a writer and director due to his commitment to working on "The Croods" (2013).
  • The trailer for the film featured the music "Beyond the Clouds," composed by the music production company Audiomachine.
  • Unlike the first film, this one was distributed by 20th Century Fox, as DreamWorks Animation ceased cooperation with Paramount Pictures in 2012.
  • When designing the islands of their fantasy world, the artists of "How to Train Your Dragon 2" drew inspiration from the nature of Norway.
