What's left behind the scenes

  • Mr. Peabody and Sherman are characters from the animated television series «The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends» (1961–1964).
  • Robert Downey Jr. was considered for the role of Mr. Peabody.
  • A short film, «Home» (2014), was shown in theaters before the animated feature.
  • Rob Minkoff always liked «Peabody's Improbable History» from the Rocky and Bullwinkle stories, and he had dreamed of making a full-length adaptation of it for many years.
  • A painting featuring Bullwinkle from "The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show" (1959–1964) can be seen in Mr. Peabody's apartment.
  • The scene where Peabody and Sherman fly kites is an allusion to Benjamin Franklin's experiments on atmospheric electricity.
  • Among Mr. Peabody's memories is a scene on a river, where a girl in Egyptian clothing finds a cradle with a baby. This is an allusion to the biography of the prophet Moses, who was found and raised by the Pharaoh's daughter.
  • In the series "The Simpsons," Mr. Peabody and Sherman appear in the sixth season, sixth episode (Treehouse of Horror V), where Homer travels through time.
  • The time machine in the cartoon is called the Wabac machine. This is a distorted spelling of the phrase "Wayback machine."
  • Work on the character design began in 2006, when Dreamworks Animation had just acquired the rights to use them, and the script hadn't been written yet. The designers were given the opportunity to "go freelance" and work on the characters for several months without daily check-ins, which was a novelty in Dreamworks' policy. The future cartoon's creators acknowledged the need to recreate Jay Ward’s characters in volumetric animation as closely to the original source as possible, while also making them more organic and modern.
  • By official order of Dreamworks, a real cake was baked for the premiere party, exactly replicating the design of Marie Antoinette’s cake in the cartoon.
  • A surreal nightmare sequence, in which the dog, tied to a kennel, helplessly watches Sherman, represented as a giant flower, gradually move away from him and then disappear, was intended to demonstrate Peabody’s sole, all-encompassing fear of losing Sherman. For various reasons, this scene was not included in the final version of the cartoon.
  • In one of the early script versions, it was planned that Peabody would travel to the past and meet Sherman before his adoption in order to save their family relationship in the future.
  • At various stages of the cartoon's production, versions of plot arcs were discussed in which Mr. Peabody and Sherman encourage the ancient Egyptians to build the famous Sphinx, travel to Ancient China to get advice from Confucius and accidentally destroy the Great Wall of China, get caught in a heated shootout in the Old West, leave footprints on Easter Island near the Moai statues, witness the signing of the Magna Carta by King John of England, visit the Hanging Gardens of Semiramis, dock at Baffin Island on Christopher Columbus’ ship, look deep into the ages and help ancient humans invent the wheel. In addition, among the famous historical figures who could have appeared in the cartoon were women’s rights activist Susan B. Anthony, Aztec king Montezuma I, and Native American guide Sacagawea.
  • According to director Rob Minkoff, Ty Burrell was approved for the role because his voice "could embody various aspects of a modern character – not only intelligence and affability, but also the underlying softness and warmth of Peabody."
  • Mr. Peabody and Sherman are characters from the cartoon series "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle" (1961–1964).
  • Before the main feature, a short film called "Almost Home" (2014) was shown in theaters.
  • Rob Minkoff always liked "The Incredible History of Peabody" from the Rocky and Bullwinkle series and had dreamed of making a full-length adaptation of it for many years.
  • A painting of Bullwinkle from "The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show" (1959–1964) can be spotted in Mr. Peabody’s apartment.
  • In "The Simpsons" series, Mr. Peabody and Sherman appear in the sixth season, sixth episode (Treehouse of Horror V), where Homer travels through time.
  • The time machine in the cartoon is called the Wabac machine. This is a distorted spelling of the phrase "Wayback machine".
