When Lee Marvin (1924-1987) arrived on set in Helsinki, he had to be taken straight to the hospital due to a chronic illness caused by excessive alcohol consumption. The film's director, Michael Apted (1941-2021), ordered rehearsals to begin while Marvin was still in the hospital.
The Gorky Park shown in the film was not filmed on location in Moscow. One of Helsinki's parks, the capital of Finland – Kaisaniemi Park – stood in for Gorky Park.
The luxurious baths shown in the film are actually a wellness center in Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. At the time of filming, it was owned by members of the Swedish group ABBA.
