Short description
Four adopted brothers return to their Detroit hometown when their mother is murdered and vow to exact revenge on the killers.

What's left behind the scenes

  • Mark Wahlberg improvised almost all of his character's lines.
  • The brothers' house was filmed in the gritty suburbs of Hamilton (an English-speaking port city in the Canadian province of Ontario).
  • All the snow shown in the film is real, not artificial.
  • Actors Ethan Hawke, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck all turned down the offer to play Bobby. Hawke liked the script but couldn't find the time to film. Damon and Affleck refused, finding the script "too harsh".
  • The car chase scene was originally planned to be filmed using Hot Wheels toy cars.
  • The scene in the combined bathroom took two days to film. For 12 hours a day, Mark Wahlberg had to sit naked on the toilet, Garrett Hedlund had to stand under a hot shower, and Tyrese Gibson had to walk around in a bathrobe. At the end of filming, Wahlberg had to be lifted off the toilet, and Hedlund's skin was peeling from prolonged exposure to the water.
  • In the bar scene where the brothers drink Jack Daniel's whiskey, they have concentrated apple juice in their glasses.
  • In the initial script, all the brothers survived. In the second version, they decided to kill Jack to give the brothers even more reason to hate Victor Svet.
  • When Jack is shot in the legs in the film, Garrett Hedlund fell and hit his head on a telegraph pole. After the second take, blood flowed from the head wound.
  • Actors Ethan Hawke, Matt Damon, and Ben Affleck all turned down the offer to play Bobby. Hawke liked the script but couldn't find time to film. Damon and Affleck refused, considering the script “too harsh”.
