Short description
A television reporter and cameraman follow emergency workers into a dark apartment building and are quickly locked inside with something terrifying.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The entire film was shot on location. No sets were built for the filming.
  • Directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza specifically chose actors who did not know each other in order to make everything look as realistic as possible, as well as actors capable of improvising in front of the camera.
  • The actors were deliberately not given the script, so none of them knew what fate awaited their characters, sometimes right up until the moment filming was about to begin. Therefore, the actors were constantly nervous – which was exactly what the plot required.
  • The building was filmed in one of the districts of Barcelona. In 2007, after the film became popular, it was overrun by young criminals. Now, this building is often visited by tourists and fans of the film.
  • Initially, the directors considered following the film crews behind the police, but they decided to choose firefighters instead, as they were more popular with the public than the police, especially after the events of September 11th.
  • Before the start of filming, directors Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza agreed that if one of them suggested an idea that the other didn't like, that idea would be rejected without further discussion or persuasion.
  • In the scene with the firefighter falling from the ladder, viewers see the genuine reaction of the actors, as none of them were informed that it was going to happen.
  • The final scenes were actually filmed in complete darkness using infrared cameras. The actors couldn't see anything at all, so they had no idea what was going on.
