In the scene at the store, Umi asks Shun where he lives (25th minute of the film). Shun replies with something along the lines of "Mononoke." This is a reference to Hayao Miyazaki's film "Princess Mononoke" (1997). Strangely enough, the Russian version of "From Up on Poppy Hill" contains another reference to this film. The voice actress for Umi also voiced Mononoke, and the voice actress for Umi's mother also voiced Lady Eboshi – Mononoke's enemy.
In the scene where Umi and Shun board the liner (84th minute), a sign with the inscription "Ghibli" can be seen on board.
