- The film is based on the true story of Elegance Bratton, who was kicked out of his mother's house for being gay and spent ten years on the streets. When Bratton joined the Marine Corps, he needed to retrieve his birth certificate from his mother, as depicted in the film. Shortly after the film received approval, the woman passed away. Gabrielle Union wears some of her jewelry and uses the family Bible in the film.
