Short description
A medical researcher is sent to a plague outbreak, where he has to decide priorities for the use of a vaccine.

What's left behind the scenes

  • A film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Sinclair Lewis.
  • "Arrowsmith" is the first American sound film to feature a Black character (Dr. Oliver Marchand) with a university degree and speaking flawless English.
  • The film follows the novel quite closely, but makes no mention of Arrowsmith's wealthy, selfish second wife: Myrna Loy has only a few scenes with Colman, and the development of their characters' relationship is not shown. According to film historian Robert Osborne, Helen Hayes recalled that some scenes were removed from the script without explanation. This happened because Samuel Goldwyn hired John Ford on the condition that he abstain from drinking during filming, and as a result, Ford rushed the production as much as possible.
