The music performed by the band in the film was recorded live by the actors during filming.
Filming took place in the town of Wicklow, Ireland, and in the state of New Mexico, USA.
The film is inspired by Frank Sidebottom, but in addition, the plot was also inspired by musicians such as Daniel Johnston and Don Van Vliet (better known by the pseudonym Captain Beefheart).
John Ronson, co-writer of the screenplay, was part of Frank Sidebottom's band, and initially, it was planned to adapt his work. However, a decision was later made to base the film on fictional events.
