Short description
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, 1991. High school freshman Charlie is a wallflower, always watching life from the sidelines, until two senior students, Sam and her stepbrother Patrick, become his mentors, helping him discover the joys of friendship, music and love.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Stephen Chbosky's novel "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" (1999). The author of the novel also directed the screen adaptation.
  • Initially, the film received an R rating from the MPAA for “teen alcohol and drug use, and scenes of a sexual nature,” but was later changed to PG-13 after an appeal due to “mature thematic material, drug and alcohol use, sexual content, and fight scenes – all involving teenagers.”
  • Filming took place in Pittsburgh from May 9th to June 29th.
  • When Patrick is holding his report card, the name “Patrick Nothing” is written at the top. In the book ("The Perks of Being a Wallflower") on which the film is based, Patrick was constantly called Patty, and he once said: “Listen, you either call me Patrick or call me nothing,” which is how he got his nickname “Nothing.”
  • In all the cafe scenes, the posters with food pyramids are those seen on the walls of the 2011 updated version, and not as they should have been in 1991 and 1992.
  • In the scene where Sam was about to leave, the evening before her departure, and they were talking to Charlie, Sam's lips were painted, but in subsequent shots, when they were about to kiss, Sam's lips were no longer painted.
  • The film is based on Stephen Chbosky’s novel “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” (1999). The novel's author also directed the film adaptation.
