What's left behind the scenes

  • The image of Lyudmila is a possible reference to another famous Soviet sniper, Lyudmila Pavlichenko. She had over three hundred confirmed kills, while Vasily Zaitsev had approximately 257.
  • The film's title is taken from William Craig's book "Enemy at the Gates: The Battle for Stalingrad" (1973), which documents the real military feats of Vasily Zaitsev.
  • Some Soviet veterans of Stalingrad were so offended by the inaccuracies in the film that they considered the portrayal of the Red Army to be an insult. On May 7, 2001, shortly after the film premiered in Russia, the veterans expressed their dissatisfaction in the Duma, demanding the film be banned, but this request was not granted.
  • In reality, there was no happy reunion between Vasily Zaitsev and Tanya Chernova. They believed each other to be dead until the end of the war, and Tanya learned that Vasily was still alive several years later; he was already married.
  • In reality, there was no Major König. The German shot during the sniper duel was Heinz Thorvald, a colonel in the SS and an ace sniper. The Germans, unwilling to admit the death of their best sniper, claimed that the man killed was Major König. Documents found by Zaitsev on the body confirmed that it was Thorvald.
  • During the banquet, the State Anthem of the USSR, adopted in 1944 with the lyrics from 1977, is played, although the events in the film are dated to the end of 1942.
  • In the film, Vasily Zaitsev's date of birth is incorrectly listed as March 3, 1915, on his party card. Vasily Zaitsev was actually born on March 23, 1915.
  • The T-34-85 tank can be seen several times in the background as a prop, despite the film being set in 1942. This tank was not adopted for service until January 1944.
  • Jude Law and Ed Harris were cast in the roles of Vasily Zaitsev and Major König, respectively, for their expressive gaze. During filming, they repeatedly had to convey emotions without uttering a single word.
  • Many extras were involved in the large-scale battle scenes. Considering they were in a strictly limited space, using remote control to detonate charges was dangerous. That is why stunt performers were among the extras, who stepped on a specific spot at the right moment, activating pressure sensors.
  • The film's title is taken from the book “Enemy at the Gates: The Battle for Stalingrad” (1973) by William Craig, which documents the real military exploits of Vasily Zaitsev.
