What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was shot in 40 days.
  • Wentworth Miller’s screenplay ranked fifth on the ‘Black List’ – a list of the ten best unproduced screenplays – in 2010.
  • Carey Mulligan, Kristen Stewart, Rooney Mara, Emily Browning, Emma Roberts, Bella Heathcote, and Ashley Greene were all considered for the role of India.
  • The contenders for the role of Charlie Stoker were Colin Firth, James Franco, Michael Fassbender, and Joel Edgerton. Firth was initially cast in the role, but he declined, and Matthew Goode was cast instead.
  • On set, the director communicated with the actors through an interpreter. Matthew Goode joked about this: “Park understood more than he let on. Give him a little whiskey – he really knows the language.”
  • Alfred Hitchcock's film 'Shadow of a Doubt' (1943) served as inspiration for Wentworth Miller in writing the screenplay.
  • Composers Philip Glass and Clint Mansell collaborated on developing the film's soundtrack: Mansell wrote the main soundtrack, and Glass wrote the melody played by India and Charlie on the piano.
  • Filming began in September 2011 in Nashville, Tennessee, near Nicole Kidman’s residence.
  • Jodie Foster and Carey Mulligan were chosen for roles in this film, but both declined, and Mia Wasikowska and Nicole Kidman took their place.
  • Park Chan-wook's first English-language film.
  • Wentworth Miller revealed in an interview that he pictured Matthew Goode as Charles Stoker when writing the screenplay.
  • Jodie Foster was initially cast in the lead role, but declined and Nicole Kidman took her place. In 'Panic Room' (2002) it was the other way around – Nicole Kidman could have gotten the lead role, but she refused, and Jodie Foster was cast instead.
