What's left behind the scenes

  • The original shell Marcel used was purchased in a souvenir shop. When director and screenwriter Dean Fleischer-Camp discovered he needed more shells, he went to the same shop, and it turned out that the shells – even of the same type and displayed in the same shop – were very different from each other. Ultimately, Fleischer-Camp created the shells he needed using a 3D printer.
  • Work on the film took about seven years. The script was written, lines were devised for it, then everything was recorded and assembled, and then the whole process was repeated – until the lines for the entire film were recorded. After the storyboard for each scene was created, they filmed scenes with live actors and backgrounds, followed by puppet animation filming (on average, a whole day of filming resulted in 5-10 seconds of screen time), and then all of this was overlaid on the actors' scenes.
