What's left behind the scenes

  • This is the first French film since 1987 to win the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Jury president Sean Penn later reported that the film was chosen unanimously.
  • The film was shot using a standard script that linked together dialogues in the classroom, mostly improvised.
  • In 2008, France officially submitted this film for consideration for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
  • Director Laurent Cantet filmed scenes in the classroom using three digital cameras. One was focused on François Bégaudeau, the author of the novel of the same name (2006) on which the film was based, the second on a student, and the third on the class as a whole.
  • This is a film adaptation of a partially autobiographical novel in French by the lead actor, François Bégaudeau, who once worked as a teacher in a school in central Paris. An English-language version of the film was subsequently released.
