What's left behind the scenes

  • This is the directorial debut of music video director Tarsem Singh, who became famous for the video for R.E.M.'s song "Losing My Religion." The director partially reused the visual style of this video in "The Cell."
  • Katherine is watching the French animated film "Fantastic Planet" (1973) directed by René Laloux on TV.
  • When Peter himself delves into the subconscious of Carl Sträger, he encounters three women staring open-mouthed at the sky. This plot point alludes to the painting "Dawn" by Norwegian artist Odd Nerdrum.
  • The episode with the dismembered horse, each fragment crammed into a glass vessel, is inspired by the work of British artist Damien Hirst (primarily his installation "Some Comfort Gained from the Acceptance of the Inherent Lies in Everything"). Another episode involving a horse, where Catherine chases Carl through a stone entrance hall, is inspired by the painting "Schacht" by Swiss Surrealist H.R. Giger.
  • The final scene of the film in the desert was originally shot as an earlier scene depicting another therapeutic session between Catherine and Edward in the latter's world. The director later decided that the film should end by returning to Edward's story and added digital cherry blossoms and snow to this scene to show that it is now part of Catherine's world.
