What's left behind the scenes
- The film's working title, 'Mars,' had to be changed to avoid confusion with the film 'Mission to Mars' (2000).
- The surname of Kate Bowman (Carrie-Anne Moss) is a reference to Stanley Kubrick's film '2001: A Space Odyssey' (1968), in which the commander of the spaceship was Dave Bowman.
- Thomas Sizemore's character mentions his girlfriend named Faith. In 'Strange Days,' Sizemore's character had an affair with his friend's lover, who was also named Faith.
- Most of the scenes taking place on Mars were filmed in the Jordanian desert.
- Unlike other science fiction films, this film realistically depicts what happens to fire in zero gravity.
- The shot of Earth taken from space, appearing at the beginning of the film, was borrowed from 'Contact' (1997). However, for 'Red Planet,' it was flipped, and it is impossible to see Earth from space in that orientation.
- The film competed with another movie about Mars released around the same time – 'Mission to Mars' (2000).
