Short description
Steven Russell leads a seemingly average life – an organ player in the local church, happily married to Debbie, and a member of the local police force. That is until he has a severe car accident that leads him to the ultimate epiphany: he’s gay and he’s going to live life to the fullest – even if he has to break the law to do it. Taking on an extravagant lifestyle, Steven turns to cons and fraud to make ends meet and is eventually sent to the State Penitentiary where he meets the love of his life, a sensitive, soft-spoken man named Phillip Morris. His devotion to freeing Phillip from jail and building the perfect life together prompts him to attempt (and often succeed at) one impossible con after another.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on Steve McVicker’s novel “I Love You Phillip Morris: A True Story of Life, Love, and Prison Breaks” (2003).
  • The real Steven Jay Russell was unable to watch the entire film, but he managed to watch several clips on Google and was amazed at how Jim Carrey portrayed him (Carrey and Russell never met, the actor only had the opportunity to listen to a recording of Russell's voice). Overall, he called the film quite surreal.
  • This film could have been banned in the US, as distributors considered it “too homosexual.” They feared that distributors would not be found, and the film's future might be limited to DVD format. At the request of the distributor, overly explicit scenes were cut from the film and the number of references to same-sex love was reduced.
