What's left behind the scenes
- This film made Robert Stroud the second most famous inmate of Alcatraz prison, second only to Al Capone (1899-1947).
- At one point, Robert Stroud had over 400 birds in his cell.
- The real Alcatraz is only visible when approaching the shore by boat or directly from the pier. All other scenes used specially constructed studio sets.
- The film's release sparked a press campaign for Robert Stroud's release. This did not happen, as Stroud in reality had nothing to do with how he was portrayed on screen. In reality, he was a psychopath who killed several people while at liberty, and several more while incarcerated.
