Short description
A veteran soldier returns from his completed tour of duty in Iraq, only to find his life turned upside down when he is arbitrarily ordered to return to field duty by the Army.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's title is a reference to a clause in the contract with the Ministry of Defense stating that the term of service of a person bound by the terms of the contract may be extended regardless of that person’s wishes, and that individuals who have once signed the contract may be re-drafted for active duty from civilian life if necessary.
  • Kimberly Peirce's (one of the screenwriters and director) younger brother served in the army after the September 11, 2001 tragedy. From the first day of his deployment to Iraq, she regularly contacted him and inquired about the details of his daily life. This introduced Peirce to how young people enlist in the army, how they are trained, and what they strive for, what they experience in Iraq, and what happens to them upon their return.
  • During the filming of the boxing scene, Joseph Gordon-Levitt injured his right shoulder. Filming had to be suspended for two weeks to allow him time to recover, during which time work on the script continued.
