What's left behind the scenes

  • The film is based on the autobiography of Solomon Perel, published in 1989.
  • The film was met with a rather cool reception in Germany, and press reviews there were far from laudatory. The film wasn't even submitted by Germany for the 'Oscar' award in the 'Best Foreign Language Film' category. Regardless, 'Europa Europa' became one of the most successful German films shown in the United States, winning a 'Golden Globe' (awarded by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association) and being nominated for an 'Oscar' in the 'Best Adapted Screenplay' category.
