The film is based on the novel by Marc Levy, 'What If It Were True?' (Et si c'etait vrai, 2000).
Steven Spielberg paid Marc Levy two million dollars for the film rights to the novel.
After one of the unsuccessful takes, Mark Ruffalo jokingly jumped out the window on set. It wasn't a great height, and he landed on his feet safely, but he terribly frightened the entire film crew.
At times during filming and rehearsals, at the director Mark Waters' instruction, actor Mark Ruffalo wore an earpiece, and his lines were fed to him by Reese Witherspoon, who was not present on set. This was done to help the actor feel more comfortable in a situation similar to that of his character in the film, who transmits messages to Elizabeth to those who cannot see or hear her.
