What's left behind the scenes
- An aeropunk-style interpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel 'Treasure Island'.
- It took 10 years to make the film.
- The film flopped at the box office, and the planned sequel (Willem Dafoe was going to voice the villain) was never made.
- The human characters were drawn, while the mechanical parts of John Silver and the robot B.E.N. were created using computer technology. The ship was created using a technology called 'Deep Canvas'. All three animation methods were used in some scenes.
- This was the first Disney film in which models were not created by hand from clay. Silver's mechanical parts were made from plastic using laser technology.
