An aeropunk-style interpretation of Robert Louis Stevenson's novel 'Treasure Island'.
It took 10 years to make the film.
The film flopped at the box office, and the planned sequel (Willem Dafoe was going to voice the villain) was never made.
The human characters were drawn, while the mechanical parts of John Silver and the robot B.E.N. were created using computer technology. The ship was created using a technology called 'Deep Canvas'. All three animation methods were used in some scenes.
This was the first Disney film in which models were not created by hand from clay. Silver's mechanical parts were made from plastic using laser technology.
