Spirit is a Kiger Mustang stallion. These were horses of Spanish conquistadors that broke away from Mustang herds.
Dreamworks used a Donner Mustang, purchased by the company for $50,000, as a model for drawing Spirit.
It took over 9 months to create the scene that begins the film; it contains a total of 700 elements in the background, and an average of 30 layered backgrounds are used in each frame.
Only real horses were recorded for the sound design.
Tom Hanks or Robert Redford were considered for the role of the narrator.
