What's left behind the scenes

  • The film was shot in the Dolomites, in northern Italy. A number of scenes were staged in a Roman studio, where shaving foam was used instead of snow.
  • Jean-Louis Trintignant, at the time one of the most popular and in-demand actors in France, agreed to work in a not particularly respected genre – the European Western (at that time) – on the condition that he wouldn’t have to say a single word throughout the entire film.
  • According to director Sergio Corbucci, the idea for the silent gunman was suggested to him by Marcello Mastroianni, who once admitted that he had always dreamed of starring in a Western, but unfortunately, did not speak English. When, after some time, Corbucci met Jean-Louis Trintignant, he discovered that he also didn't know English. But since Corbucci always had a weakness for characters with various injuries, he decided that it was time to shoot a spaghetti western with a silent hero.
