The film was shot in the Dolomites, in northern Italy. A number of scenes were staged in a Roman studio, where shaving foam was used instead of snow.
Jean-Louis Trintignant, at the time one of the most popular and in-demand actors in France, agreed to work in a not particularly respected genre – the European Western (at that time) – on the condition that he wouldn’t have to say a single word throughout the entire film.
According to director Sergio Corbucci, the idea for the silent gunman was suggested to him by Marcello Mastroianni, who once admitted that he had always dreamed of starring in a Western, but unfortunately, did not speak English. When, after some time, Corbucci met Jean-Louis Trintignant, he discovered that he also didn't know English. But since Corbucci always had a weakness for characters with various injuries, he decided that it was time to shoot a spaghetti western with a silent hero.
