What's left behind the scenes

  • Historians refer to Countess Anna as the first lesbian character in cinema.
  • For filming this movie, director Georg Wilhelm Pabst (1885-1967) requested actress Louise Brooks (1906-1985) from the 'Paramount Pictures' film company, but was refused, and Pabst was forced to film with Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992). Meanwhile, Brooks had a scandal with the film studio over her fees; the company flatly refused to increase her salary, Brooks broke her contract with the company and immediately contacted Pabst to inform him that she was willing to film instead of Dietrich.
