What's left behind the scenes

  • Sudden Death is an additional period in a hockey game.
  • In 1995, an adaptation of the film was written by American author Stephen Mertz and released as an audiobook.
  • The film utilizes the concept of "Die Hard" (1988), largely repeating its plot devices.
  • According to Randy Feldman, he wrote the first draft of the script, and it was intended to be a comedy and a parody of action films. Of all the material he wrote, only the scene of the protagonist, played by Jean-Claude Van Damme, fighting a terrorist in a penguin mascot costume – the mascot of a sports club – survived into the released film. The original idea for the film formed the basis for the script of the 2020 remake, Dallas Jackson's 'Sudden Death,' starring Michael Jai White.
  • The filmmakers didn't have enough money to pay for the entire extras cast, so in some places, the filled stands featured cardboard cutouts of people instead of actual people.
  • Whitney Wright played the role of Emily, the protagonist's young daughter played by Jean-Claude Van Damme, but the role was initially offered to Mara Wilson. Wilson's parents declined, considering the script too violent and full of brutality.
  • Jean-Claude Van Damme is a staunch vegan and consistently refuses to work on set with representatives of the animal world (in any condition or form). This film features shrimp, and special effects specialists spent a total of 90 hours sculpting them from ballistic gelatin and painting each one individually. Ballistic gelatin is a material whose composition is specifically tailored to simulate the viscosity, density, resistance, and other properties of human tissues in experiments studying the effects of ammunition.
  • At the 36th minute, the mercenary Carla kills a guard near the elevator with a headshot from a Sig Sauer P226 pistol and drags his lifeless body into the elevator. During the elevator ride, the guard turns out to be alive, which is highly improbable, and begins to moan. Carla finishes him off with two shots from a different pistol – an HK VP70.
  • When Darren McCord picks up a cap from the elevator floor at the 38th minute and a fight breaks out with Carla, it is clearly visible that a stunt double is performing the entire fight scene.
  • At the 38th minute of the film, the mercenary Carla (played by Faith Minton) in a mascot costume kicks Darren McCord (played by Jean-Claude Van Damme) in the jump. It can be noticed that a stunt double is in the frame. He takes the hit and falls onto a meat slicer.
  • At the 39th minute, Darren McCord runs at Carla to prevent her from using the pistol she picked up from the floor. At this moment, it is visible that a stunt double is running and jumping.
