- The film was released in the 90th year of Franco Zeffirelli's life and on the 45th anniversary of the release of his 1968 version of "Romeo and Juliet".
- An 18-year-old daughter of Olivia Hussey (who played Juliet in the 1968 film), India Eisley, was also invited to audition for the role of Juliet in the new adaptation, but she declined to audition.
