What's left behind the scenes

  • Both Michael Keaton, who played the title character, and director Tim Burton preferred to make Beetlejuice as politically incorrect as he was in the first film. They both like this trait of the character – despite the political correctness accepted today, as they believe Beetlejuice does not 'evolve' at all.
  • Paul Warren and Nick Kellington (along with many others) played the roles of the shrinking characters in the film. The tiny heads were animatronic, operated by puppeteers.
  • According to Tim Burton, this film is only possible if Michael Keaton agrees to reprise his role as Beetlejuice (he first appeared on screen in this role in Tim Burton's 1988 fantasy comedy 'Beetlejuice'). Keaton, however, stated in March 2014 that this is the only sequel he would be interested in playing in.
  • Winona Ryder (who played Lydia in 'Beetlejuice') made a single condition when meeting with the directors of the series 'Stranger Things' (2016-) Matt Duffer and Ross Duffer, when offered a role in their project (where she played Joyce). She said that if a sequel to the Beetlejuice story ever got to filming, they would release her from filming the series to star in the future Beetlejuice film. They agreed and honored the condition.
  • Initially, Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis (who played Adam and Barbara in Tim Burton’s 1988 film, respectively) were slated to appear in cameo roles. However, Burton later decided that no amount of digital de-aging could convince audiences that Adam and Barbara hadn’t aged a bit since the first film.
  • Jenna Ortega first learned about the upcoming filming of a Beetlejuice sequel after starting work on the series 'Wednesday' (2022-). Tim Burton called her at home and asked her to come to his office to chat about the series, and when she arrived, he slammed the script for the future film onto the table in front of her and offered her the role of Astrid.
  • Tim Burton is a big fan of Federico Fellini's films, hence the decision to tell the story of Beetlejuice in Italian, in a black and white palette, and in the spirit of the celebrated director's films. Burton himself has always said that the story of Beetlejuice is like a prologue to one of Fellini's paintings. Among other things, Monica Bellucci is Italian and played the Italian Dolores.
  • Six ginger wigs were prepared for Catherine O'Hara, but makeup artist Christine Blundell, at the actress's insistence, dyed them a poisonous red.
  • Arthur Conti auditioned for the role via a phone call, and Conti learned he had been cast as Jeremy on April 1st and initially thought it was an April Fool's joke.
  • When starting filming, Tim Burton didn't even bother rewatching the original film or reading the scripts of potential sequels that had accumulated over the years since the original film's release.
  • The death of Charles (played by Jeffrey Jones in Tim Burton's 1988 film) reflects a nightmare that Burton once had, where he survived a plane crash into the ocean but was eaten by sharks.
