• The filmmakers turned to the mayor of Southport with a request to somehow honor Mel Gibson (who played Gene Karruthers). He agreed and arranged an impromptu ceremony in which he presented the actor with the keys to the city and declared December 16, 2023, Mel Gibson Day. The official later explained that he wanted to express his gratitude to Gibson, as it was thanks to him that filming began in Southport and provided work, albeit temporary, for hundreds of local residents.
• Director David Henry later recounted that he was motivated to make this film by his disappointment with the lack of films for family viewing on the market. According to Henry, he wanted to make a relatively serious and slightly scary film in the spirit of the 1980s that would appeal to a young audience.
