Hudson Hawk

Shy. Sensitive. Law-abiding. Polite. Respectful... I don't think so.

Short description
Eddie Hawkins, called Hudson Hawk has just been released from ten years of prison and is planning to spend the rest of his life honestly. But then the crazy Mayflower couple blackmail him to steal some of the works of Leonardo da Vinci. If he refuses, they threaten to kill his friend Tommy.

What's left behind the scenes

  • The film's title is a parody of the title of the famous detective film "The Maltese Falcon" (1941).
  • This was the last film released by TriStar Pictures before it merged with Columbia Pictures, which was experiencing similar financial difficulties. Because the film lost so much money, Sony had to rescue TriStar by buying the remaining shares and reorganizing the company within the newly formed Sony Pictures Entertainment. As with United Artists when they were bought out by MGM, Columbia and Tri-Star allowed TriStar Pictures to retain its own logos and continue making films under its own name.
  • Bruce Willis constantly offered new ideas, and the script was repeatedly rewritten during filming.
  • A balancing glider model from the Renaissance period played a significant role in the film. This model is not an exact replica of Leonardo da Vinci's (1452-1519) invention. It was created by Aero Vironment of California based on his drawings.
  • Filming took place late at night, but New Yorkers still gathered in crowds nearby to watch the process and catch a glimpse of Bruce Willis. The actor later thanked New Yorkers for their interest and patience on television.
  • When it came to casting, the filmmakers had no doubts about the actor for the role of Tommy. Danny Aiello (1933-2019) and Bruce Willis had known each other for many years and, according to Aiello, had long wanted to work together. Aiello even postponed the start of another project in order to film with Willis.
  • Filming took place from July 9th to December 3rd, 1990.
