What's left behind the scenes
- The drug lord's mansion, destroyed by an American missile, was a real brick building in Mexico City that the filmmakers happened to buy. The building was actually blown up by a missile.
- The attack on the motorcade of government cars was filmed in Mexico City, where the filmmakers recreated a street in Bogotá. Harrison Ford drove the car himself in the final scene.
- The character of Ernesto Escobedo in the film was based on Pablo Escobar (1949-1993), the leader of the Medellín Cartel in the 1980s. Escobar did not live to see the completion of the film.
