The director discovered both Justin Pierce and Leo Fitzpatrick skateboarding casually on the streets of Manhattan. Larry Clark himself also indulged in this activity, diligently learning to skateboard from his young actors.
Many of the young actors seriously believed they were simply being filmed for a documentary; Miramax managers didn't reveal all the cards regarding the script and genre of the film to the reckless boys and girls for some time.
The film was shot over six summer weeks in New York in 1994, based on a script that Harmony Korine wrote at the age of 18.
Justin Pierce, one of the leading actors, committed suicide at the age of 25, hanging himself on a warm July day in 2000 in a hotel in Las Vegas. Two suicide notes were found in his room.
